An old office file with a doc extension opens in a protected view and may result in “Microsoft Word (protected view) has stopped working” message.

This issue was observed on the upgraded Windows 10 computer. The display link drivers are the main reasons behind this error message.
Windows 10 update may not download all the drivers for you hardware but they can be separately installed through the manufacturer’s resources.

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer. Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed. If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this error appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press f8 o select advanced start-up options, and then select safe mode.
Upon restart, the computer informs that Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown.
